A killer combo: Camilla Skovgaard for Amanda Wakeley shoes
February 19, 2010 by admin
The shoe collection collaboration between designer Amanda Wakeley and danish shoe designer Camilla Skovgaard, that first appeared at London’s Fashion Week in September 2009, are now available for you to walk in… “This is truly a shoe for women designed by a woman “ said Amanda Wakeley, “Supremely sexy but utterly comfortable and wearable. I know that I for one will be living in these shoes this summer!”
About Amanda Wakeley’s Spring/Summer collection: “Inspired from traditionally dressed Indian men and women, past and present, from Kerala to Rajasthan, by the way the women wear their sari’s with such creative ease; the soft silhouette; the flowing of fabric; the wrapping of the strong hot colours around the body; layering of textures; flashes of embellishment; flashes of skin between the choli and draped sari; the wrinkled texture of the churidaar and dhoti pants.”
About the shoe: “The Camilla Skovgaard for Amanda Wakeley Brown shoe has a suede outer, leather straps, leather lining and a leather soled, man-made platform. The heel height is 12.5cm and the platform is 2cm.” (That’s almost 5 inches of heel ladies!)
Still need more flash? The open silhouette and lighting-rod platform not enough? There’s a Zebra pattern.

shuzsociety.com enlisted the expert advice of our friends at DesignerShoes.com about how to make sense of women’s shoe sizes. Their mission is to offer trendy, stylish and sophisticated shoes in narrow, medium, wide and extra wide, sizes 4 to 15 and widths AAA (slim) to WW (extra wide). DesignerShoes.com’s “Ask The Shoe Lady” column answers questions from women all over the world who have a hard time finding shoes that fit their wider feet. Today, they breakdown “width” and how to measure right!
Think of Shoe Volume, Not Length and Width
Most shoes are sold according to length measurements. In the USA shoes are also sold according to width measurements. But shoe fit depends upon how the volume of your foot fits into the empty volume of the inside of a shoe. When you think about it this way….. filling an empty glass with water is like filling a shoe with your foot…. it is easier to understand the importance of considering the width and thickness of your foot when you buy shoes.
Understanding shoe fit is complicated for women because the shapes and styles of our footwear have so much more variety. You may need one size and width for sneakers, and an entirely different size and width for pointy toed, high heel pumps. Sandals or flip flops because they enclose so little of your foot may be the easiest to buy. Whether you need extra wide women’s shoes or extra narrow women’s shoes, it’s a good idea to understand how shoes are made and sized in order to get a good fit.
What Women’s Shoe Width Measurements Mean
Shoe manufacturers have standardized rules for how to measure length but shoe width measurements are much more variable. There is some general agreement that a shoe increases 3/16th of an inch around the circumference of the ball of the foot for every increase in width for the same length. But different manufacturers accomplish the extra width differently, and unfortunately one can never be sure as the manufacturing processes differ even for the same style.
Here are the terms used to measure shoe widths (from the most narrow to the widest):
SS = AAAA = “extra slim” or “quad”, the narrowest size generally available. Even these widths are increasingly rare.
S = AAA = “slim” or “triple”
AA = N = “narrow” or “double A”
M = B = “medium”, the most common or “average” width for that size.
W = C or D = “wide”
WW = EE or EEE = “extra wide”
WWW = EEEE = “triple wide’. These widths are even more rare than the SS widths, although that may change as the rate of obesity increases.
Selecting By Size and Width
Even the width measurements above do not consider the thickness or girth of your foot. They only measure one dimension – an outline of your foot from one side to the other on paper, across the widest part of your foot. Be prepared to buy shoes in several sizes depending on the style you want and whether the length, width or depth of your foot, or overall shape of your foot, is more suitable for the style you want.
DesignerShoes.com had a customer not long ago who was wearing size 11M’s because that was the size she could get her foot into. But the shoes didn’t fit well, or look good. After some experimenting she discovered that her best shoe size was an 8.5WW! She needed the width but was buying the length in order to get the volume she needed in a shoe!
For more details on shoe fit adventures, read Ask The Shoe Lady.
Hard To Find Widths
Seasoned shoe salesmen used to favor customers with very narrow feet. The stereotype was the elegant, rich southern belle who loved to spend money on expensive shoes. Wide feet were considered “peasant” feet and were stereotyped with lower price shoes. In more recent years the stereotype has changed. Very narrow feet are seen to belong to very cranky customers who’s feet are always in pain because they lack cushioning and who try on dozens of shoes but never buy. Wider feet are seen as belonging to healthy, athletic young women who are interested in a variety of sport and comfort shoes and will soon be buying career and party shoes.
Shopping for Ladies’ Shoes by Width
DesignerShoes.com is a big believer in being the Shoe Fairy Godmother for women around the world who have a hard time finding fun, fashionable shoes that fit. So we pay a lot of attention to finding styles and brands that go beyond average sizes and widths to include great styles in longer, shorter, wider and narrower sizes. That’s the mission of DesignerShoes.com. That’s how we got started.

Carolina Pagano’s Spring 2010 collection
Carolina Pagano, the luxurious Made in Brazil shoe and accessory brand, is delivering their Spring 2010 collection in stores now.
“For Spring 2010 we are about texture and pop colors. We’ll be seeing a lot of contrasts and embellishments,” offers designer Carolina Sadowski. “For Spring 2010 we decided to use natural fibers like jute and linen to add texture, which we used in our best seller shoe Maribel.”
Nude hues, perhaps Spring 2010’s hottest trend, plays a big part in the collection. “And the pop of color comes in some pipings and in the strapy sandal Kate, both in bright cyan and fuscia. I believe the bright colors are a great way to spice up your outfit.”
Overall, the collection speaks to designer Sadowski’s summers in Brazil. “The vivid hues of Brazilian bikinis and neutral tones of sand and jute compose an exquisite color palette ranging from luscious fuchsia to brilliant gold.”
“My inspiration for the Spring 2010 Collection was to provide something that is both alluring and fascinating for women to wear, while also telling a magical tale through beautiful shoes.”

Designer Spotlight ~ Attilio Giusti Leombruni

Who is Attilio Giusti Leombruni?
In an era where shoe production is heading to the Orient, Attilio Giusti Leombruni (AGL for those in the know) pride themselves on maintaining an Italian operation. AGL’s leathers and components are all Italian made. Their production takes place in their own factory nestled in the valley of Montegranaro, a municipality in the Province of Fermo. “It has been our home for generations and we couldn’t imagine living or working anywhere else,” offers Marianna Giusti, the designer behind the brand and a third generation designer of the Giusti family. She inherited the art of design from her father Attilio, for whom the brand is named.
“We also pride ourselves on running an eco-friendly organization. In the fall of 2008 we converted the factory to solar power. While we are not vegan, we use natural vegetable dyes and non-toxic glues. We believe that a shoe is a work of art. We like to say we are artisans working in a state of the art facility.” In this way, Attilio Giusti Leombruni is a company that embraces the best of modern technology, but refuses to abandon traditional craftsmanship.
What is your design philosophy?
“Designing the Attilio Giusti Leombruni Collection comes natural to me,” says Giusti, “and at the same time is a new challenge every season. It’s necessary to start with an idea, a specific theme and with time and patience it all comes together. One moment I’m negotiating leather deals and then the next I’m off for a seaside picnic with my husband and nephews. One night at dinner with clients, another out with my sisters. I love the fact I can go to my closet and find a ballet, a riding boot, a smart pump and a fun metallic sport shoe and they each express who I am. My style preferences vary, but I will never compromise on fit or comfort.”
Describe AGL’s design style 5 words:
Refined. Pure. Timeless. Smart. Classic.
What brought you to the shoe industry?
“Shoes are part of my DNA. I grew up among shoes! Since I was a child I spent my afternoons in my father’s workshop. I loved watching him work. It was our time together. I had my own sketch book and would draw shoes, heels, buckles. He’s always encouraged me and I remain his #1 fan. My sisters all caught the shoe-bug as well. Sara and Vera work in PR and production. My brother who recently graduated from university has joined the team, too. It’s a family affair! Mom still works tirelessly in the stitching room and Dad still runs the show.”
What can we expect for Summer 2010 collection?
“Inspiration comes from two great cities where urban landscapes merge with water: Vancouver, Canada on the Pacific Ocean and Venezia on the edge of the Adriatic Sea. Colors from the different architectural silhouettes and the spirit of the two lifestyles inspire me. I love the season’s sea blue and mango patent colors. They remind me of sunset at the shore.”
And for Winter 2010?
It is characterized by a new freedom of movement… “which include loose and soft fits, rounded shapes and a new mix of volumes. I’m in love with our new equestrian-inspired boots and can’t wait until our new buttery over-the-knee design makes its debut.”
What else is in the works?
A Men’s Collection — a collaboration between Giusti and her father and brother.
How does AGL give back?
For more than 20 years AGL has been supporting “La Lega del Filo d’Oro” — an Italian association that helps blind and hearing-impaired children. Their aim is to inspire, educate, assist and impart skills to allow these children to achieve their dreams and be as self-sufficient as possible.
Just a few of the places to find Attilio Giusti Leombruni…
Nordstrom.com and at 83 of their stores; The Shoe Box in New York, NY; Matava Shoes in Baltimore, MD; The Shoe Salon on Cape Cod, MA; FootStock in Boston, MA; Shirise in Glencoe, IL; Wilkes Bashford in San Francisco, CA; Village Bootery in Tequesta, FL; Embellish in Chatanooga, TN; and Goler Shoes in Santa Fe, NM.
Getting Personal:
Which song or recording artist sets the tone for your spring 2010 line?
“Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz’s duet “Lucky.” The song always makes me smile. Last summer I married the love of my life and feel very lucky that he is my best friend.”
What are you reading right now?
“Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson…so inspiring!”
What is YOUR personal favorite pair of shoes?
As much as I love our heels and boots, I have to say my favorite is our toe cap ballet. Love the feel, love the way it is perfect with so many pieces in my closet.
How do you pack your shoes for travel? Tips?
“I always use AGL dustbags – one comes with every pair. Instead of using paper to stuff them, I roll up my socks and tuck them in my shoes. Saves room in my suitcase and helps shoes keep their shape,” offers Giusti. “One other travel tip I live by is to always pack a pair of metallic shoes. They go with practically everything and as much as I would love to wear a different pair every day, I like to travel smart and light.”
What is your favorite vacation spot? And why!
“Italy remains my favorite because it keeps surprising me, though I am fortunate that both my husband and I travel for both business and pleasure and have spent time all over the world,” ends Giusti. “Each corner of this wonderful country is steeped in ancient tradition and everything from its remarkable landscape, to its stunning architecture echoes to a particular sensibility towards beauty that is so inherently Italian.”
Soles4Souls… continued Haiti relief effort.

Long after the headlines stop focusing on Haiti, Soles4Souls — the Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you — continues to collect and distribute shoes to families in need. Their organization distributes these shoes, free of charge, to people around the world. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away more than 7 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently distributing one pair every 9 seconds). The shoes have been distributed in 125 countries, including Haiti, Kenya, Nepal and the United States. In fact, in the time it takes you to read this post, they will have distributed another 6+ pair.

There are ways you can help. Searching their site by your zip code (go to “about” and click “participation locations”), you’ll find several locations where you can drop off gently-used and new shoes. Or, you can follow them on Facebook, Twitter and watch them on YouTube. And of course, visit www.giveshoes.org for more information.
