“My design philosophy is simple: quality and confidence—seen through distinctive styles,” offers Behnaz Kanani when asked of her trademark suede-covered footwear cushions. “I dream every bit of every shoe, and then I follow [the design] until it makes me smile. Every Heel. Every Sole. Every Shape. Every Detail.”
The design aesthetic:
Instinct, fervor, creating the unexpected, use of exotic materials, all translated into: Decadent Luxury.
Why shoes?
“Its all about the shoes! I love colors and love the texture of leathers and exotic skins, and the emotions it creates when they all get mixed in a magical way. If there was a formula to it I would tell you,” Kanani adds. “It just happens!!!”
Fall 2008:
“Fall 08 is about communication of tradition, the designs explore aspects of salient memories into innovative structures; cuts carry monuments in mind and space,” says Kanani. “It is an intrinsic journey through time with flowing lines and precious leathers influenced by architecture and symbolism of ancient civilizations.”
Kanani’s favorite:
“Laleh the featured “fab friday” shoe,” Kanani sites as her favorite, “because I can wear them in hundreds of ways, dressing down or up. I'll wear them with a beautiful silk dress from Rick Owens. The dress is a work of art, paired with Laleh, I feel so sexy and chic.”
Sneak peek at spring 2009:
Spring is about colors. Flowing lines, charming heels and very funky and architecturally inspired handmade wooden platforms made out of a mix of exotic skins and precious leathers.
Your assistant Yoshi:
“He’s sitting right next to me...” says Kanani of her cat Yoshi, “looking at me! When I'm designing, he sits on my designs or shoe samples in a sign of protest, as if he wanted to say hey lady (or mum), I'm here, don't you see me! He’s such a boy!”

Celebrities are catching on to Kanani’s footwear designs. She’s been spotted on the heels of Carla Bruni Sarkozy, Chloe Sevigny, Cate Blanchett, Daphne Guinness, Roisin Murphy and Charlize Theron.
In your iPod?
“I had a particular obsession listening to Madonna’s latest album Hard Candy whilst designing the spring 2009 collection.”
What’s in your suitcase?
A pair of flats, a pair of wedges and a pair of high-heeled peep-toes for special occasions.
Favorite far-away place:
“I have recently fallen in love with Panarea, a very special island off the coast of Sicily. There are no cars, plenty of wonderful restaurants and the sea is deep crystal blue. A nice scenario to relax, socialize, read.”
Book worm:
I just finished, “Chasing Harry Winston” and am reading “A life with my sister Madonna.”
